When Winter Visits: Tips for Protecting Your Home From Freezing Temps

South Carolina is renowned for its warm hospitality. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, you’re always greeted with a friendly smile and, of course, a glass of sweet tea. However, there’s one guest we don’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for: winter. Though it only makes a brief

appearance each year, bringing a few nights of freezing temperatures, when it does arrive, you’ll

want to be prepared.

While the chill does not last long, it’s still important to take a few simple steps to ensure your

home is ready for those unexpected cold snaps. Here are some practical tips to winter-proof your

South Carolina home:

·        Insulate Your Pipes -- Protect your pipes—especially those in uninsulated areas like

attics, crawlspaces, and garages—by wrapping them with foam insulation or heat tape.

This simple step can prevent freezing and bursting, saving you from costly repairs down

the road.

·        Let the Faucets Drip -- This keeps water moving through the pipes and helps prevent freezing. Be sure to focus on faucets that are located along exterior walls or in areas without adequate insulation, as these are the most vulnerable.

·        Guard Your Garage -- Garages are often the first place to feel the effects of cold

weather, especially if they are not insulated. If you have plumbing in your garage, make sure to keep the doors closed and seal any gaps or cracks. Adding weatherstripping around the door frame can help maintain warmth inside. If you have a space heater, it’s worth considering using it for a few hours to keep the temperature above freezing.

·        Block Those Drafts -- Check doors, windows, and any other openings for drafts and seal them with weatherstripping or caulk. If you have a fireplace, make sure the damper is properly sealed when not in use. Blocking drafts will keep your home warmer, reduce heating costs, and prevent cold air from seeping in.

·        Keep the Heat On -- Even if you’re planning to be away from home during the winter months, it’s a good idea to keep the heat on at a low setting (around 55°F). This helps protect your pipes and ensures your home stays warm enough to avoid any winter-related mishaps.

Winter may only visit South Carolina for a brief moment, but when it does, these small

precautions can make a world of difference in protecting your home. With a little preparation,

you can enjoy the cozy warmth of your Southern retreat—no matter how cold it gets outside.
